I was asked by curator Chris Fitzpatrick to provide a situation-specific artwork. The object was to be dumped in his trash can and wheeled out to the curb at dusk for regular weekly pickup and disposal, along with his recycling and compost bins.
After Robert Rauschenberg's Cardboard series, I imagined Oscar The Grouch's lovingly roughed up take on the artist's work. It was built out of containers rummaged from Oscar's Sesame Street neighbors, including a seed box taken from Big Bird. Tacked and smacked together, the composition was generously stomped upon, then worked lavishly with mud, and inscribbled and dated by Robert Grouchenberg.
